How often should you get a sports massage?

5 min read

In short

For most people, a sports massage every 4 to 6 weeks keeps tension in check. If you train hard or are working through an injury, every 1 to 2 weeks is more useful. Once you feel good, monthly maintenance is usually enough.

There is no single right answer, and anyone who gives you one without asking about your body is guessing. How often you should book a sports massage comes down to three things: how much you train, whether you are managing an injury, and what you are trying to achieve.

Here is how I usually think about it with clients.

If you train regularly

If you are running, lifting or playing sport several times a week, your muscles are constantly being loaded and repaired. A sports massage every two to four weeks helps clear out the tension before it builds into something that affects your training or turns into an injury.

Think of it as maintenance, the same way you would service a car that is doing a lot of miles rather than one sitting on the drive.

If you are working through an injury or chronic tension

When we are actively trying to resolve something (a tight lower back, a recurring calf issue, stubborn shoulder tension), sessions closer together work better at first. Every one to two weeks gives the tissue a chance to change and stay changed, rather than tightening straight back up between appointments.

As things improve, we space the sessions out. You do not need to come weekly forever.

If you just want to feel less stiff

You do not have to be an athlete to benefit. If you sit at a desk all day, sleep badly, or simply carry your stress in your shoulders, a monthly session is a good rhythm for most people. Some come once every six weeks and feel great on that.

Before an event

If you have a race or a competition coming up, timing matters. A deeper treatment is best at least three to five days before the event so your body has time to settle. A lighter, flushing session can be useful the day after to aid recovery.

The honest answer

The best schedule is the one you will actually keep, that fits your budget, and that keeps you feeling good. If you are not sure, book a 60-minute Deep Reset to start, and I will give you an honest recommendation based on what I find, not a package you do not need.
