In short
Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm pressure to release deep muscle tension and is usually about relaxation and pain relief. Sports massage is goal-led, it uses a mix of techniques to prepare, recover or rehabilitate the body for activity.
People often use these terms interchangeably, and there is a lot of overlap. But they are not quite the same, and knowing the difference helps you book the right treatment.
Deep tissue massage, in short
Deep tissue massage focuses on reaching the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue using slow strokes and firm, sustained pressure. The goal is usually to release long-held tension, ease chronic pain and help you relax.
It is not defined by activity or a sporting goal, it is about working deeply into tight areas.
Sports massage, in short
Sports massage is goal-led. It borrows deep tissue techniques but combines them with others (trigger point work, stretching, and lighter flushing strokes) and applies them with a specific outcome in mind:
- Preparing the body before activity
- Recovering after training or an event
- Rehabilitating an injury or restriction
Crucially, a good sports massage starts with an assessment: how you move, where the problem is, and what you want to get back to. The treatment is then tailored around that.
So which do you need?
- If you mainly want to unwind and ease general tension, a relaxation-focused treatment like The Deep Calm is ideal.
- If you have a specific issue, a sport, or a recovery goal, sports massage is the better fit because it is built around results.
The good news: you do not have to diagnose yourself. When you book, tell me what is going on and I will choose the right techniques for you. If you are genuinely unsure, message me and I will point you to the right session.
The bottom line
Deep tissue is a technique. Sports massage is an approach that uses that technique, and others, with a clear goal. Both can feel firm, both can be brilliant, the difference is what we are trying to achieve.
