What to expect from your first sports massage

4 min read

In short

Your first sports massage starts with a short chat about your health and goals. You'll be professionally draped throughout, the pressure is always checked with you, and you'll leave with simple aftercare advice. It's normal to feel a little tender for a day.

If you have never had a sports massage before, it is completely normal to feel a bit unsure. Here is exactly what happens, so there are no surprises.

Before we start: a quick consultation

Your first session begins with a short conversation. I will ask about your general health, any injuries or medical conditions, medications, and what you would like to get out of the session. This is not box-ticking. It is how I keep the treatment safe and make sure it is genuinely tailored to you.

Everything you tell me is confidential.

During the treatment

  • You stay comfortable and covered. You will be professionally draped with towels throughout, with only the area being worked on exposed. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in.
  • The pressure is yours to control. Sports massage can be firm, and some tight areas may feel tender, but it should never be more than you are happy with. I check in with you and adjust as we go.
  • It is interactive. I might ask you to breathe into an area, or give a little feedback on what you are feeling. That helps me work more precisely.

If at any point you would prefer something gentler, just say, we can switch to a lighter approach like The Deep Calm.

After your session

It is common to feel a little tender for 24 to 48 hours afterwards, a bit like the day after a good workout. That settles quickly. To get the most from your treatment:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Move gently and avoid a hard training session that same day
  • Follow any simple stretches or pointers I give you

How to prepare

There is not much to do. Try not to arrive on a completely empty or very full stomach, wear or bring comfortable clothing, and give yourself a few minutes so you are not rushing in stressed.
